An enterprise was at great pane on its telecommunications costs. The double glazing manufacturer had grown from a single location to 11 offices across the country but had not updated its antiquated phone system. Fed up, they installed voice-over-IP technology and is now saving £20,000 a month.
The reason for the dramatic cost savings: Voice-over IP bypasses traditional circuit switched networks, thereby avoiding the fees of traditional circuit-switched telephone communications and greatly reducing implementation costs.
"Since our small distribution centres have only two telephones each, we installed IP phones at those locations to avoid the implementation cost of an entire phone system," said Benjamin Kay, director of IT. Using technology from Voipsters via a systems integrator reseller they were able to run VoIP service over the existing frame relay WAN that it already had connected to each of its sites.
Their savings are arguably on the high end, but many small businesses are beginning to look at VoIP as a viable option for their companies, according to a new report published by the Chamber of Commerce.
That's because the average small businesses -- including those with one or two employees -- spend £343.17 per month on average for telecommunications services, according to the survey of 2418 small businesses.
